How Good Is the Video From the New 5D Mark II? Pretty Damn Good.

Two readers sent me links to Vincent LaForet's video, Reverie, shot with Canon's latest DSLR the full frame Canon 5D Mark II.

How good is the HD video that a 5D Mark III DSLR can shoot? Well, if you have the professional equipment that LaForet has, pretty friggin' amazing. His short movie looks as good as anything you'd see in a movie or on MTV.

LaForet makes the most of some of a full-frame DSLR's strengths, including incredibly sharp focus and limited depth of field. He also uses the MTV-like technique of shooting in short clips - I haven't read yet how long the Canon can shoot a continuous HD clip, but I know that the Nikon D700 is limited to five minutes of HD video, and I think the Canon has similar constraints.

Will your videos look this good? It's important to remember that LaForet had a lot of resources at his disposal. Beautiful models, extensive lighting setups, exotic locales. He even shoots from a speeding sports car and a helicopter! He used no less than eleven expensive lenses for this shoot, and a third of the video is devoted to a long credit roll that lists all the people who make it possible.

So, while our results may vary, it's pretty eye-opening to see what a best-case scenario looks like in the hands of a master like LaForet.

The Nikon D700 does not have video. The Nikon D90 has HD video (720) for five minutes and longer for smaller formats.
